Communication Is Essential
VietNow
phone cards have served veterans for many
years. These phone cards are now operating
in two arenas.
Phase I
For several years
VietNow has periodically sent packets of
calling cards to the Voluntary Service
department of each VA hospital in the nation.
In recent years we have added military
hospitals and Fisher Houses to our distribution
list. Last year during the Veterans Day
observance, members of the National Board
delivered packets of calling cards to patients
at Walter Reed Hospital and to residents
at the nearby Fisher House.
The many thank
you letters that we receive at the National
Headquarters made us feel that the costs
of this program was not only warranted,
but was fully in tune with our motto, “Veterans
Helping Veterans.” During
our visit to Walter Reed Hospital, we were
overwhelmed by the way the service men
and women’s faces lit up when we
handed them one of our calling cards. At
that point, our suspicions of the value
of the minutes of communication that we
were giving to these worthy recipients
far outweighed any dollars and cents amount.
Phase
II
During this year’s
National Convention, we kicked-off a calling
card marketing project to help support
Phase I.
We have designed a $20 (300
units) calling card to be marketed to our
members and to the public.
We have fielded
comments about the personal use of calling
cards which state that we are a little
behind the curve with this venture. Others
have stated that with the proliferation
of cell phones, calling cards are a thing
of the past. Our marketing response to
the above thinking:
• Calling cards are the perfect answer
for calls that need to be made during times
of no cell phone signal or when cell phones
are not charged. When carried in a purse
or billfold, a calling card could possibly
be the only option when a car breaks down
or has a flat tire, during an accident,
an illness or other emergency. They can
be carried just for communication insurance.
• A calling card given to a student
heading away to college can reassure parents
that their loved ones will have the ability
to call home whenever the need should arise.

While
the above deals with personal use of calling
cards, we are also offering this calling
card as a tool for use by our men and women
in the military.
We have developed two avenues in which
people may participate in getting these
cards into the hands of the men and women
who are currently serving our country.
• A person may purchase calling cards
to send to their loved ones or people who
they know are currently serving in the
military.
• Cards may also be purchased for
the troops, and we will send the cards
to a deployed person. We can either send
the calling card anonymously to the military
person, or we can include the “donors” contact
information.
It is our sincere hope that
the marketing of our $20 VietNow calling
card will keep our program of distributing
calling cards to VA hospitals going well
into the future.
