For the past four years, VietNow National
Headquarters has awarded the chapter
that has done the most to support and promote
the POW/MIA issue.
This award was created
to encourage chapters to increase their
efforts to resolve this issue that has
been a shameful blemish on our history
for decades.
Chapters report on their
efforts to National Headquarters in March
of each year.
National’s executive assistant
removes any information that pertains
to the name of the submitting chapter.
Then, during the April meeting, the National
Board votes on each report, using a point
system.
The winner of the award is revealed
during the National Convention in May.
The winning chapter receives a plaque,
and the POW/MIA Chairperson has the
opportunity to attend the National
Alliance of Families POW/MIA Forum
in Arlington, Virginia, in June of
the following year.
This year’s
winner was Pacific Northwest chapter.While
this chapter may be small in numbers, their
efforts on the issue are large.
They hold
an annual POW/MIA Balloon Launch, donate
to efforts to declassify government files
that may hold important information, “Boots
on the Ground” searches in
Laos, and POW/MIA meetings. In September
they distribute and display numerous
POW/MIA Recognition Day posters.
POW/MIA information is presented
at every chapter meeting and at other
public events.
Their involvement
reflects the commitment of VietNow
on the issue, and should be an
inspiration to all chapters.
As the chapter
was not able to attend the National Convention
this year, the plaque was awarded
to POW/MIA chairperson Patricia
Hall and newsletter editor Yolanda
Ferguson during the National Alliance
of Families Forum, June 22-24,
2006.
